Audi A3: Electric Version Set for 2027 with Up to 700 km Range

Audi Plans New Entry-Level Electric Model

Currently, Audi plays a minor role in the electric car market, which is dominated by Chinese manufacturer BYD and Tesla. Volkswagen, Audi’s parent company, ranks fifth globally. According to Statista, Audi holds the 13th position in terms of electric vehicle sales for 2023.

The company is working on new electric models such as the Q6 E-Tron, but its focus remains on combustion engines. However, in 2027, a new entry-level electric model, positioned below the Q4 E-Tron, is expected to be launched. It is not yet clear how much the electric A3 will cost. The current combustion engine model is priced at €31,300, while the Q4 E-Tron starts at €52,950. It is conceivable that the price may slightly increase compared to the current A3.

“E-A3” with MEB Evo Platform

Technical chief Oliver Hoffmann has confirmed that this will be an A-segment model, specifically comparable to the A3. However, many details about the “E-A3” are still unknown. The vehicle was initially expected to be based on the SSB (Scalable Systems Platform), but this electric platform has been delayed until 2028. Instead, the car will be based on Volkswagen’s modified Modular Electric Drive Toolkit (MEB Evo).

Up to 700 Kilometres Range

The platform allows for ranges of up to 700 kilometres, surpassing the current MEB platform by 150 kilometres. Additionally, charging with 175 to 200 kW will likely be possible. MEB Evo continues to use the well-known 400-volt technology. An upgrade to the 800-volt architecture will only come with the SSP platform.

Multiple Versions Planned

The Audi E-A3 is expected to be available not only as a hatchback but also as a sedan. The electric vehicle will probably adopt the design of the upcoming facelift and will differ in some aspects from the current A3. The wheelbase and passenger cabin are set to increase, while the front bonnet will be shortened. Additionally, the wheels will be positioned further into the corners. There are still uncertainties regarding the final name of the new model. While “Audi A3 E-Tron” would be a logical choice, the “E-Tron” suffix is currently only used in conjunction with an even number.
