The President of the EU Council Antonio Costa emphasized that on Monday, Bulgaria can play a key role in the defenses of Europe.
Costa, who made a three -day visit to the country, made a trip to the leading firearms and producer Arsenal JSCO ammunition and said that Bulgaria could become a leading supplier of European protection.
“The security of Europe begins in Ukraine. The safety of Europe and Ukraine cannot be separated from each other. We decided to significantly increase our investments in the field of defense. To invest more in defense, it means that more investments in our economy, research and innovative opportunities. ”
“If we want to succeed in this protective program, we need to activate all the ability in different states -member states. Bulgaria has good conditions for playing a key role in this process. Not only to meet the needs of Bulgaria, but also to be a supplier of the protective capabilities of other European countries. ”
Costa also said that further investments between European countries can increase their competitiveness.
Costa said that his visit to Bulgaria took place in important time for Sofia after the country’s entry into the Schengen region and preparation for joining the Eurozone.

“The defense costs this year exceed 2 percent of GDP. The purpose of the government is to increase these expenses using the ability to activate an element that allows excluding rethinking projects within the framework of initiatives in the field of joint procurement in the EU. ”
Since 2004, Bulgaria has been a member of NATO, and the Trump administration was not easy, like many countries in the alliance, since US defense priorities are no longer in Europe.
