Compact Defender SUV Set to Join JLR Line-up by 2027

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is preparing to introduce a new compact 4×4 SUV, informally referred to as the ‘baby Defender,’ by 2027. This eagerly awaited addition will expand the Defender family and strengthen JLR’s growing electric SUV portfolio.

A Long-Awaited Model

Rumours of a smaller Defender have circulated for years, though it has never appeared in JLR’s official product plans—until now. The upcoming model will share the company’s cutting-edge EMA electric vehicle platform with next-generation versions of the Range Rover Evoque, Velar, and Land Rover Discovery Sport.

JLR’s CEO, Adrian Mardell, confirmed the development at a recent investor conference, indicating that the Range Rover, Defender, and Discovery brands will all utilise the new EMA platform. While Mardell did not divulge further specifics, this announcement highlights the potential for a new Defender variant that will likely adopt the ‘Defender Sport’ name.

Electric-Only Platform

The compact Defender will be designed exclusively for electric power, distinguishing it from the larger, combustion-engine-based L663 Defender, which uses JLR’s D7 platform. Its electric successor, expected in 2026, will adopt the MLA architecture.

By contrast, the smaller Defender will align closely with its platform mates, potentially measuring approximately 4.6m in length, 2m in width, and standing under 1.8m tall. This positions it alongside competitors like the upcoming Dacia Bigster and Skoda Kodiaq, though likely at a higher price point.

Distinctive Design and Capabilities

Despite being more road-oriented, the compact Defender will retain the rugged aesthetic that defines the brand. Expect squared-off body panels, purposeful cladding, and a tough, utilitarian design reminiscent of its larger counterpart. An array of outdoor-themed accessories will likely be available to enhance its adventurous appeal.

Strategic Brand Expansion

The introduction of this model reflects JLR’s broader strategy to distinguish its four main brands—Jaguar, Discovery, Range Rover, and Defender—into distinct product families. As part of this strategy, the Defender line will embrace the tagline “embrace the impossible,” highlighting its iconic off-road legacy.

JLR’s marketing director, Anthony Bradbury, underscored this ethos, describing the Defender as “an explorer’s vehicle” built for adventure. He emphasised that even the smallest Defender will embody the same pioneering spirit that has defined the brand for 75 years.

Looking Ahead

As the electric SUV market becomes increasingly competitive, JLR’s investment in the EMA platform signals its ambition to stay ahead. This platform is designed for maximum efficiency while supporting advanced battery and drivetrain technology, ensuring the compact Defender remains a formidable contender in the premium SUV segment.

With production slated for JLR’s Halewood factory, the compact Defender could become a significant player in the brand’s electric future, blending modern innovation with legendary off-road heritage.
