Government studies using law to contain prices for accommodation and tickets on COP30

The federal government is investigating alternatives within the legislation to try to contain prices and accommodation with high airline tickets in Belém at the climate meeting COP30 In November and should have meetings with the sector to limit prices that in many cases are considered abusive, says an authority involved in the organization of the event.

According to the extraordinary secretary of the COP30 federal government, Valter Correia Dos Santos, talks have already been started within the government, especially with the Ministry of Justice, to search the legal tools that can be used to “sensitize” the hotel chain.

“This is consumer protection tools, against violations of popular finances, cartel formation … There are a number of instruments that can be applied. We do not want to apply, but we believe there are these tools and therefore we want to reach a minimum of reasonableness,” the secretary said.

The price of accommodation in Belém fired during the COP30 period and reached thousands of Reais per night. The city with 1.3 million inhabitants has a hotel capacity estimated in 18,000 beds – less than a third of the expected visitors for police, which led to a race for hotel rooms, houses, apartments and even Motell.

The cost of accommodation scared delegations and especially the third sector, which can reduce the number of participants. The delegations have sought the Brazilian government with concern about the cost of keeping dozens of people in Belém in two or three weeks of negotiations.

According to Santos, investments that have so far succeeded in raising the number of beds to 50,000, including the construction of two new hotels in former public buildings, the construction of a modular hotel with 400 rooms to receive state managers and employing two vessels that will be anchored in the port in the capital Pará.

Nevertheless, it admits the secretary, the prices are beyond what the government considers reasonable, and the idea is to call a meeting with the sector next week and show that the government can initiate legal measures, if needed.

“When you have a higher demand, this is natural, but it must be reasonable. It is not possible to be 50, 100 times larger. I think the hotel chain and property owners are sensitive,” he said.
