Lack of security proof of security led Anvisa to prohibit advertising and marketing of the plant
Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) forbade on Thursday (3), commercialization, distribution, production, advertising and the use of food supplements from Ora-PRO-Nobis throughout the country.
The agent was published in Dou (official newspaper), after discovering that the plant whose scientific name is Pereskia AculataThey are not authorized to use as a component of these products, due to a lack of scientific security and effectiveness.
In a press release, the agency explained that in order to be authorized as a food supplement, the ingredient should demonstrate, by research that it is a source of nutrients or substances relevant to the human body. According to Anvis, “(…) companies interested in using ora-PRO-Nobis in the formulation of supplements must provide this evidence.”
The health supervision decision also determines the collection of products that are already on the market. Limitation, however, does not affect the consumption or marketing of a fresh plant, which is still released for traditional use in food, especially in the states of Goiás and Minas Gerais.
Finally, Anvisa emphasized that dietary supplements are not drugs and cannot claim that therapeutic properties such as treatment, prevention or treatment of the disease. “These products are recommended only to supplement feeding healthy people,” sums up the text.
