Morgado de Mateus names a street near Vila Mariana, but it is not the name of people and the owner of this Nobiliárchic title ruled São Paulo. The public archive for the state government in São Paulo promotes from April 28 the exhibition “in the name El Rey: 250 years by the government in Morgado de Mateus in São Paulo – 1765 – 2015”. The show shows documents during the colonial phase in the captain of São Paulo and will be shown until July 31, 2015.
The central figure in the show is Luís António de Sousa Botelho Mourão, which received from the King of Portugal a title of differentiated nobility. Instead of baron, viscount or marquis; The denomination was Morgado, based on the transfer of land possession on Morgadium basis, that is, a form of family organization whose stammering of successors, had code, statutes and behaviors to be followed. In Lisbon there is a congregation named Mateus where a housing palace was built for the precious successors in the morning and consequently bills of Vila Real.
Our Morgado de Mateus was the fourth on the successor’s family and lived between 1722 and 1798. He arrived in Brazil at the request of King of Portugal in 1765 and ruled São Paulo for ten years to reverse the poverty and abandonment where the captain was after the end of the entrance and flags, which they left. The entire southern region of Brazil, from Paraná to Talk, was also threatened by the risk of occupation of the Castilian heavy colonies, dominated by Spain. To modify this situation organized Morgado de Mateus government, strengthened the defense, created villages where today are cities such as Jacareí and São José Dos Campos, registered the population and promoted the economy. “All of these Activities have generated Written Documents, Such As Requirements, Permits, Warings, Companies, Patents and Letters of Sesmarias, Which Preserved and Are Part Of The Show,” Says Marcelo Quintanilha, Curator of the Exhibition and Also That Sees the Possibility of the Interested Public To Find Out How the Governments Worked and the Rules of the Past Worked. “This survey clarifies how power relations between the state and the economy, justice, military and agricultural organization were given, which gives a mirror where the past can be observed.
