V8 Dominance Continues: Mercedes-AMG Unwraps New GT Coupé

This high-performance car, steeped in the classic V8 tradition, shares its underpinnings with the recently introduced Mercedes-Benz SL convertible. Unlike its predecessor, this new version focuses on enhancing practicality without compromising on performance.
The design and dimensions of the new AMG GT Coupé have been upgraded to provide a more comfortable and spacious driving experience. With an increased length, width, and wheelbase, this road-trip-friendly vehicle now offers improved interior space and accommodates a 2+2 seating arrangement. While Mercedes-AMG humorously notes that the rear seating might be suitable for individuals up to 1.5 meters tall, the car compensates with a practical boot that starts at 321 liters and expands to 675 liters when the rear seats are folded down.
To balance the added practicality with performance, the engineers at Affalterbach have worked to minimize the car’s weight. This was achieved through the use of lightweight materials such as aluminum, magnesium, and fiber composites. The result is a curb weight of 1,970kg, contributing positively to the car’s agility and efficiency.
The lineup of the new AMG GT Coupé consists of two models at launch: the GT 55 and the flagship GT 63. Both models feature a hand-built 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine. The GT 55 produces 350kW and 700Nm of torque, propelling it from 0 to 100km/h in a claimed 3.9 seconds, with a top speed of 295km/h. On the other hand, the GT 63 boasts even more power, delivering 430kW and 800Nm, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 3.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 315km/h.
Power is distributed to all four wheels through an upgraded AMG Speedshift MCT 9G transmission, featuring a wet starting clutch for improved response times and reduced weight. The car’s driving dynamics are further enhanced by an electronically controlled rear axle locking differential, active rear-axle steering, and AMG active ride control suspension.
The suspension setup is notable, featuring an independent double wishbone arrangement with anti-squat at both axles. Standard 20-inch AMG light-alloy wheels (with optional 21-inch wheels) offer excellent grip with 295/35 ZR tires up front and 305/35 ZR tires at the rear. To improve aerodynamics and stability, the car employs active air control in the front, a retractable rear spoiler, and an adjustable underbody element.
Stopping power is ensured by the installation of a lightweight AMG high-performance compound brake system, equipped with 390mm composite front rotors and six-piston aluminum fixed calipers at the front, and one-piston aluminum floating calipers gripping 360mm composite discs at the rear.
Inside the car, a driver-focused cockpit houses advanced technology, including an 11.9-inch MBUX touchscreen infotainment system, a digital instrument cluster with performance menus, and a flat-bottomed AMG-spec multifunction steering wheel. The interior boasts 64 selectable mood lighting options, electrically adjustable AMG sports seats, and the AMG Dynamic Select system, offering various driving modes.
While pricing and local availability are yet to be announced, production of the new AMG GT Coupé is anticipated to commence in early 2024. This second-generation model combines enhanced practicality with the hallmark AMG performance, offering a thrilling driving experience for enthusiasts and automotive connoisseurs alike.
