April 21st Tiradentes Day, National Holiday To honor one of the most famous characters in Brazil’s history.
The date is not an optional point, as it is not up to companies or state and municipal governments to dispense the workers this day.
Currently, the provision of the Tiradentes holiday is in Law 10.607/2002, which is also about other national holidays. But April 21 has been regarded as a national holiday since 1890 – At that time, through the decree from the provisional government of Deodoro da Fonseca.
Who was Tiradentes?
Tiradentes was the nickname for Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, celebrated to this day as a martyr by Minas Gerais Inconfidência. This movement, which lasted from 1789 to 1792, arose against the high taxes that Portugal also accused and defended independently of Brazil – which only occurred decades later, in 1822.
The nickname came from one of the works performed by the revolutionary. Although many refer to him as a dentist, there is research that indicates that Tiradentes had other professions throughout his life, including tropes, miners and military. At that time, he also removed his teeth with problems, a letter he would have learned from his uncle, who was actually a dental surgeon.
It was during the military career that Timradentes approached politicians and intellectuals with libertarian ideas. At that time, a movement of deviation was born with the political and economic exploitation carried out in Minas Gerais by the Portuguese crown.

Why is April 21 a national holiday?
Although it was the first movement to claim Brazil’s independence, Minas Gerais Inconfidência failed, as its members were reported to the Crown.
The most important leaders went to exile abroad, except Tibradentes, which was hung on April 21, 1792, after almost three years.
According to researchers from UFF (Fluminense Federal University), Tradentes took all responsibility for the uprising and exempted that his companion should blame. The fact that he was the only one killed made him a national hero and one of the main symbols in the Brazilian Republic.
