US President Donald Trump began a 10% basic import tax from all countries of the world, including a group of unfavorable islands inhabited by the penguins.
In the list of 185 places covered by Trump’s tariffs, declared in the fact that he called the “Liberation Day”, there are Herd and McDonald Islands, the external territory of Australia, and Jan Mayen, the Norwegian territory in the Arctic. Do not live people in both territories.
Herd and McDonald Islands, a set of islands near Antarctica, from the most remote places of the Earth, are available only through a two -week trip from Australia and mainly populated by penguins and seals. Visits to these places are limited by environmental maintenance work and require permission.
Although they do not have people’s inhabitants and, therefore, do not have their own savings, Washington will apply 10%of bets on them, such as Continental Australia.
They are one of the several external territories of Australia, which were the subject of specific tariffs, along with the islands of Kokos (Kiling), the island of Christmas and the island of Norfolk.
The last, tiny island with a population of 2188 inhabitants will have a 29%tariff, higher than import from Australia itself.
The Prime Minister of Australia Anthony Albanese said he was not sure why Norfolk island was differentiated.
“I’m not sure whether the island of Norfolk is regarding this, it is a commercial competitor to the giant economy of the United States,” Albanze said the Australian media, adding that “illustrates the fact that no place on Earth is released.”
Despite the fact that the observatories of economic complexity showed that by 2023 the island of Norfolk exported $ 655,000 (591,000 euros) to the United States, including $ 413,000 (373,000 euros) in leather shoes, the administrator of Norfolka said SBS News in Australia, which “did not have known export” in United States.
“Tourism is the main sector of Norfolk Island and the main engine of economic activity,” the representative said. “We stood to scratch your heads about this.”
Uninhabited
In addition to the islands of Herd and McDonald, Trump’s trading war reached the uninhabited Arctic territory of Jan Mayen, which was covered with a 10%tariff, as well as the Stepirbard archipelago.
The volcanic island is part of the Kingdom of the Norwegian and does not have a permanent population. The only inhabitants are 18 people who work in the Norwegian army and the country’s meteorological institute in winter, and another 35, which arrive in the summer months.
This island is part of the Spirbard archipelago, it is also affected by 10% tariffs introduced by Trump. This archipelago is located between the Arctic and the Atlantic Ocean and has a little less than 3,000 inhabitants. The Minas Gerais Center is once, now the economy consists mainly in tourism.
The Archerland archipelago was aimed at continental Norway, which is subject to 15%. Prime Minister Johas Gargin called this measure “bad news” in an interview with the NRK public channel.
According to the television company, about 8% of the exports of continental Norway are sent to the United States, is the third largest export market in the country.
The British territory of the Indian Ocean, inhabited only by about 3,000 British and American military and other people working on the military base of Diego Garcia, joint property of the United Kingdom and the United States, is also exposed to 10% of taxes proposed by Trump.
Also at the meeting, the French foreign territory in the Indian Ocean, suffered from 37%of the tariff, despite the fact that the population of about 896 175 people.
