About 10,793 victims of human trafficking were registered in the EU in 2023, increasing by 6.9% compared to the previous year, according to the latest Eurostat data.
To date, this is the highest amount registered in the period from 2008 to 2023.
In 2023, 24 victims were registered with respect to human trafficking millions in the EU – an increase compared to 23 victims registered by a million inhabitants in 2022.
The highest EU indicators were observed in Luxembourg, Greece, the Netherlands, Austria and Sweden, while lower indicators were observed in Croatia, Lithuania and the Czech Republic.
“Higher rates can be associated with the greater ability to identify victims,” said Eurostat. “This is the case of Luxembourg, where the previous efforts, including the proactive attitude of labor inspectors who participated in compulsory training courses in human trafficking, contributed to the identification of more victims.”
Trade of people does not require a border pass and can have many intelligence goals.
In 2023, in the EU ensemble, 28% of registered victims came from the declarant, 7.9% of other EU countries and 64.1% of third countries
Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland transferred mainly the victims of their countries, while more than 80% of the victims registered in Austria, Malta, Slovenia, Spain, Denmark, Belgium, Portugal, Greece, Finland, Luxembourg, Luxembourg, Italy and Eston.
There are more women there than a man
About two -thirds of the victims registered in a crime of people trade were women or girls.
The percentage of women and girls increased by 0.5 percentage points compared to 2022.
Among the registered victims, whose form of operation was transferred, sexual exploitation was the predominant form of research in 2023, from 43.8%, although this percentage gradually decreased in the period from 2008 to 2023.
There was a jump in the number of registered victims sold for forced work or services.
In the period from 2008 to 2018, the percentage of victims, which faced the trade and forced services, amounted to 14% to 21%, and since 2019 the percentage was from 28% to 41%.
The removal of organs and other intelligence goals, including the use of fraud, criminal actions and forced begging, amounted to 20.2%by 2023.
However, the proportion of women among people’s traders is much less than the proportion of men.
Less than a quarter of suspects and convicted people’s traders were women, 24% and 23%, respectively.
The number of merchants suspected in trading was 8,471 in 2023 – 5% more than in the previous year.
Convicted people in the EU increased by 10.1% from 2022 to 2023.
The number of people convicted of people trafficking also increased by 15 of the EU 26.
